The still must tease with the promise of a story the viewer of it itches to be told.

After watching Cléo from 5 to 7, I started thinking about Cindy Sherman’s untitled film stills. Although the whole point of Sherman’s photographic series is to gesture towards that which cannot be directly referenced, I can’t help but feel that there is little bit of Cléo behind some of Sherman’s constructions of femininity. Even the motifs of the voyeuristic gaze, performance and photographic/cinematic seduction resonate with Varda’s film.
